1860 Model Light Cavalry Saber, 2nd Kansas, with copy of records, inscribed "John Johnston".  A rare and one of a kind item I.D.’ed to Major John Johnston, 2nd Kansas Cavalry. In December 1861 Johnston was 1st Captain, Crawford’s Co A, 2nd Regiment Kansas Volunteers, then 1st Lieutenant of Company A 2nd Regiment Kansas Cavalry in March 1862.  He mustered out at 1st Lieutenant and mustered in as Captain in January 1864.  At age 29 he was also mustered out as Captain of original Co A, 2nd Kansas Cavalry in April 1865.  Commissioned as Major by Governor of Kansas to fill vacancy caused by re-organization of 2nd Kansas Cavalry as a four company Battalion, he received and accepted commission May 8, 1865 with muster in to take effect May 11, 1865.
The saber is in great condition and has copies of records of owner, who during1863 and 1864 he was assigned as bodyguard and personal escort to Brigadier General John McNeil.  Yes, bodyguard, not staff as usual.  Mc Neil personally had ten Confederate prisoners shot without recourse to military law.  A bloody bunch as depicted in the movie.
